Okay ladies, its time for some real talk.  As a makeup artist, I am in the (super cool, thank you) position to be a confidante to your secret makeup worries.  Not to bust you, but… YOU ALL SAY THE SAME THING!  “I’m stuck in a rut … I want to try something new … what do you think would look good on me, try anything”  But if I honor your request, and stick a bright lip on you, for example, you FREAK OUT.  I’ve actually stopped trying new trends on clients, because I know they won’t like it.  I’ve based my whole career on giving my ladies what they want: a slightly prettier version of themselves.  Nothing too crazy.  The familiar always wins out as the favorite look.  And my clients stay happy.  So I’m happy.  Win-win, right?

And here’s the thing:  I GET IT.  I really do.  When you try something different with your makeup, it looks … well … different.  When you look at yourself in the mirror, and don’t recognize your own face, there is something deeply psychologically disturbing about that.  I mean, its your face.  You see it every day.  You like it they way it is.

So, if you are happy with your makeup, keep it the same.  Seriously.  If you love your look, there’s nothing wrong with that.

Buuuuuuuuuut… if you are one of the ladies who tweets me, emails me, stops me at a party begging for a new look, NOW IS THE TIME TO TRY IT!   Why now?  Well…

1)  Its 2011.  A new year, a new decade.  Time for a new you.

2)  You are reading a freakin makeup blog right now.  I mean, c’mon, you know you want to.

3)  I am going to tell you exactly how to do it.

4)  If that’s not enough, I’m going to motivate you with a contest.

Are you psyched?  Me too.  So here’s what you are going to do:

First, choose something new you want to try.  It could be that red lip I’ve been pushing on you forever (I know, I’m such a pusher) or it could be something small like switching your black liner to plum.  If you need ideas, I’ll be blogging suggestions throughout the month.  But the best thing to try is the thing you’ve always wanted to do.

Next, conquer your fear.  Yes, this will be scary.  It WILL look different.  Its time to “face your fear and do it anyway,” remember “change is good,”  and a billion other clichés.  Basically I’m telling you to grow a pair (but in the nicest way possible) and DO IT.

Third, wear your new look for five consecutive days in January.  (I was going to make it a week, but I was worried you wouldn’t do it.  Baby steps.)  There are a few reasons for this.  The more you practice the look, the better it will be, i.e. a straighter cat-eye, a better blended smoky, etc.  But the main reason is that you will need 5 days to get used to seeing yourself.  Trust me, the first time I wore a red lip, I thought I looked like a clown-hooker too (thanks Lexi for your awesome phrase).  But after a few days, and lots of compliments, I was loving it.  Plus, it’s a challenge, so it’s not supposed to be easy.

After that, share your experience!  Tweet it, blog it, facebook, whatever.  Let people know you are taking the #shakeupyourmakeup challenge.  For example:

“I’m taking the @makeupbyjanine #shakeupyourmakeup challenge and wearing this lipcolor …Day3 (twitpic here). https://makeupbyjanine.wordpress.com/2011/01/03/shakeupyourmakeup/”

{Official rules: you must include a link to this blog post (can be shortened with a URL shortener if you like) and you must use the #shakeupyourmakeup hashtag}

And last but not least . . . enter to win the #shakeupyourmakeup challenge!!!  Take the challenge, and for every comment you leave on a #shakeupyourmakeup blog post this month, you will receive a contest entry.  A tweet or a fb post will also get an entry, and if you write a blog post about your experience with the challenge, you will receive FIVE entries.  (if you tweet, facebook, or blog, make  sure to leave a comment below telling me where it is or I won’t know it exists!)

At the end of January, I’ll draw one winner to receive a personalized makeup lesson from me AND my top makeup product picks for you up to $200 in product value!

Eeeeeeeeeeek!  I’m SO ridiculously excited!  Are you?  Do you plan to take the challenge?  Are you mad I told you to grow a pair?  Do you have an idea on what to try?  Have you already started?  I CAN’T WAIT to read your comments!!!

Sephora “LashStash Mascara Deluxe Sampler

Who is it for?

Such an easy gift to give.  Who doesn’t love mascara?  From your 80 year old granny to your 12 year old niece, your ultra-natural yoga instructor to your uber-glam hairstylist, everyone wears it.  And seems like we are all constantly in need of a new one.

What’s in it?

Mascaras by:

Too Faced

Josie Maran

Tarte

Make Up For Ever

Blinc

Laura Mercier (great natural choice for work)

Buxom

Benefit (its the BadGal Lash… one of my faves of all time)

Sephora

Hourglass

and a Tarte eyelash curler

What do I do with it?

They each last about a month, so you could buy it and have a year’s worth of mascara for the price of one.  Or switch off: a clean & natural GOGO Argan Oil mascara for the gym, and Blic’s tubed Kiss Me mascara for date night.

Pro Tip

I’ve probably never in my life bought the same mascara twice.  I’m constantly searching for the “holy grail.”  If you are like me & have multiple tubes on deck, here are a few tips.  Remember that you should change your mascara every 3 months max.  Throw away your tube if there is any change in aroma or texture, and pitch if you get sick.  Also good to know?  A water based makeup remover is best for the gentlest cleansing, but if your mascara is waterproof, use an oil based version instead.

Tarte “Ring it In” Cheek Stain Set

Who is it for?

If you or someone you know loves cheek stains/cremes/tints.  Or, if you’ve never tried them and want to . . . because I’m telling you, you’ll want to.

What’s in it?

THREE mini Tarte Cheek Stains (a $74 value for $25) in:

Vivid (vibrant rosy pink)

Luster (peach champagne)

Flawless (soft peachy pink)

and a gold knot cocktail ring (random, but a fun bonus)

What do I do with it?

Dab a miniscule amount on your ring finger, then tap it on the apples of your cheeks with the least amount of pressure humanly possible.  Think butterfly kisses, but with blush.  Enjoy the natural, lit-from-within flush.

Pro Tip

Okay, confession:  I haven’t technically seen these colors in person.  But here’s the thing:  Tarte Cheek Stains are one of my favorite things in the world, have won every beauty award possible, and are all-around fabulous.  Yet, they still only come in seven colors.  So when there are limited edition shades, I don’t think twice about snapping those puppies up.  Also… the normal size Tarte Cheek Stains are so gigantic that is next to impossible to ever go thru them.  And at $30 each, you’d normally spend $90 to get three shades.  Which make this set a no-brainer for me.

What about you?  Do love a deal as much as I do?  Have you tried a cheek tint before?  Let me know your thoughts. . .

Essie nail polish for J. Crew

Who is it for?

Anyone who (like me) believes that everything J. Crew touches turns to gold (or, er, mauve).  I’ve literally become OBSESSED with the J. Crew color palette du jour:  muted neutrals with one unexpected punch of color.  It started with the pom-poms in their Holiday windows.  Cream, blush, peach and metallic grey with a pop of bright coral-y tangerine.  I’ve dreamed up entire inspiration boards based on this color scheme for my wedding welcome party.  In fact (and this may make me crazy) I based my Christmas eve outfit on the idea of muted neutrals with a pop.  I have a new red-orange lipstick that I’m so overly in love with its scary (Outrageous).  With intense lips as my pop of color, I wore a mauve dress, deeper & brown-er mauve cardi, taupe (on the browner side) boots, taupe (on the grey-er side) bag and a peach, silver-y grey & cream statement necklace.  Then I saw this nail polish set that EXACTLY matched my outfit.  Needless to say, I am in color palette heaven here.

What’s in it?

This set is called vixen vermilionaire (how ridic cute is that?) and includes the following four colors:

demure vixen: an iridescent cocoa mauve

vermillionaire: a heart-pounding red-orange

BFF best boyfriend: a classic creamy mauve

mink muffs: a smoky plush taupe

What do I do with it?

Um, paint your nails with it.  Or better yet, take it to the spa & have it done for you.  If you just got engaged over the Holidays, then you need a mani anyway for all the peeps staring at your hand.

Pro Tip

I kinda love the idea of one of the neutrals on your hands with Vermillionaire on just your ring finger.  In fact, I love that idea so much I’m going to go do it right now. . .

Get it here at JCrew.com

Would you wear these colors? Do you know the perfect person to get this for?  Or is it you forming that pool of drool outside the J.Crew windows like I am?  Let me know your thoughts. . .

Make Up For Ever “Rock For Ever Aqua Eyes” Set

Whose it for?

Don’t let the rock & roll, KISS inspired packaging intimidate you.  The metallic neutrals in this set can work for anyone.  One of the biggest complaints I hear from my clients is that their eyeliner runs & fades, giving them dark circles or disappearing by noon.  These will create a softly defined eye that will stay put, with just a little bit of trend-forward sparkle.  Or you can take them all the way to a shimmering smoky eye.  Perfect for New Years perhaps?

What’s in it?

Five of Make Up For Ever’s awesome waterproof eyeliners.  They go on smooth & creamy so you can smudge them to be soft and blended.  Then they dry to an un-budge-able finish (yes, it’s a word now) to last all day.  Originally a $49.50 value, priced at $36, but use the code “EXTRA” at checkout for an additional 20% off.

-Aqua Eyes in Gold 9L (metallic yellow)

-Aqua Eyes in Bronze 10L (metallic bronze)

-Aqua Eyes in Dark Grey 21L (dark metallic grey)

-Aqua Eyes in Mat Black 0L (black)

-Aqua Eyes in Silver 8L (metallic silver)

What do I do with it?

The possibilities are endless…  Line close to your lashes & softly smudge to naturally define your eye shape.  Draw a winged line on upper lashes & keep closed until dry for a cat eye.  Finish a smoky look by adding black to the inner rims of your eye.  Use the gold or silver on the inner rim to brighten the eye & make it look bigger.

Or, my favorite:  use a lighter shade and color in your whole lid, from lashes to crease.  Repeat under the eye.  Use your finger to smudge the edge so it softly fades into the crease and the line under the eye looks thick & soft.  Then use a darker liner to line all the way around your eye.  Smudge gently so the two liners fade into each other.  Set the whole thing with shadow or translucent powder for a really easy, waterproof metallic smoky eye.  Color combos to try: silver & grey, gold & bronze, bronze & black, grey & black.

Pro Tip

With waterproof liners, you only have about 20 seconds to blend them before they dry.  It’s best to draw the line on one eye and smudge immediately before moving to the other eye.

What do you think?  Have you tried a waterproof liner?  Is the metallic trend something you’ve been wanting to try?  Do you know the perfect person to get this for?  Or is that person you?  Let me know your thoughts. . .

Welcome to Fresh Face Friday!  Each week, take a peek at what I’ve been doing with Wilhelmina Denver, the local branch of the internationally recognized modeling agency.  These Fresh Faces are part of Wilhelmina’s New Development test shots… newly scouted models with potential (and legs) for days.  For many of them, the photo shoots below are their first (I know, hard to believe, but its true).  These concepts were created by yours truly & the rest of the fab Wilhelmina Denver Creative Team: Brooke, Annette, Hilary, Tina & Courtney.

This is Divinity Ray . . .

Okay, I’m not going to do the obvious thing and compare her to a “Ray” of sunshine (but it’d be true).  Seriously, this girl’s smile lights up a room. . . or a camera, obvs.  No wonder I liked her commercial shots best.  This smile is too good to waste.

Stila “The Perfect First Date” Set

Who’s it for?

If you’ve ever worried about what color goes where on your eyes, how to pick a lip and cheek color that go together, or what gloss to pair with your smoky eye, this gift is for you. (Ignore the whole “first date” thing.  No idea why it’s called that.)

What’s in it?

The $34 ($112 value) set includes:
– Smoky Eye – a Talking Palette
– Lip Glaze in Brown Sugar (full size)
– Mini Kajal Eye Liner in Smoky Quartz
– Cheek color pan in Heat
– Gold clutch

What do I do with it?

I don’t even really need to give you instruction here because . . .  the compact talks to you.  That’s right: the smoky eye palette gives you instructions as to where to apply each color.  Then use the Kajal liner on the inner rim of your eyes to complete the smolder, brush a little Heat on your cheeks, and gloss up your lips with the Brown Sugar Lip Glaze.  It’s a smoky eye & nude lip made easy;  no guessing, no decisions.

Pro Tip

If you want to get more use out of your shadow palette, remember that you don’t have to apply the shadows as instructed.  You can apply the highlight shade all over with the lid color in the crease.  Or put the highlight on the lid and crease color in the outer corner.  Combinations are endless.

Oh, and the gold clutch isn’t pictured, but I’ve seen it and its super cute.  Just sayin’.

What do you think?  Have you mastered the smoky eye?  If not, would a talking kit help you?  Do you know the perfect person to get this for?  Or is that person you?  Let me know your thoughts. . .

This is Alison…

She is an absolute sweet heart, just as bubbly and fun as she looks.  Most new models are nervous in the makeup chair before shoots, and its possible Alison was too… but you would never know it from how much she was cracking the glam squad up!  Oh, and a random-but-awesome fact?  Most of the wardrobe for these shoots came from none other than good ol’ Target.  Enjoy!

This is Alyssa.  My favorite thing about her photos was how well she connected with the camera.  She has kind of a piercing gaze, right?  I also heart that Hilary put her in pigtails for the commercial shoot, and the contrast of that to how sophisticated she shot for fashion.  Gorge.  Annnd, I kinda think she looks like Hermione.  Yep, I’m a dork.

This is Juliane…

Juliane was one of the first models signed to Wilhelmina Denver.  We took these photos of her in July.  Next month, she modeled for 303 Magazine.  The month after that, she shot the cover of Denver Life Magazine.  So, the next month she and her family moved to the east coast to be closer to modeling jobs in New York.  Oh… and she’s 15.  Wow, right?
