“Fix Your Face Friday” Freckles in Phoenix

Fix Your Face Friday

Q. Dear Joanna,

I laid out in the sun the whole time I was in college. Now I have
little brown freckles . . . and they aren’t so cute anymore.  Help!

Freckles in Phoenix

A. Dear FiP,

“Freckles” are genetic and are present during childhood.  What you may have is sun induced hyperpigmentation which is caused by repeated, unprotected sun exposure.  They will get worse as you age.  A tan is your skin’s way of defending itself from the suns harmful rays, producing pigment to protect the cells the way you put on a coat in the winter.  Eventually, with prolonged years of UV exposure, your cells will automatically produce these uneven pigmented cells causing spots.  What can you do?  STOP tanning.  There is no such thing as a safe tan.  Wear a broad spectrum sunscreen and sunglasses daily even if only running errands and walking your dog.  A cute wide brimmed hat when out by the pool or beach is a must.

Use topical lighteners such as vitamin C, hydroquinone, kojic acid or licorice root to treat the spots you have now and prevent them from darkening.
